Oxygen Sensor

The oxygen sensor monitors the engines air to fuel ratio by measuring the amount of free oxygen in the exhaust. It reports this information to the engine control unit or ECU. The basic element is a thimble-shaped section of electrolyte (Zirconia Oxide), which is called zirconia tube, flanked by a pair of thin microporous platinum electrodes on both sides. The inner electrode is exposed to the atmosphere, while the outer electrode is exposed to the exhaust gas. It has some characters when meeting with high temperature: since the atmosphere side of the electrolyte is exposed to a higher concentration of ions than the exhaust side, the inner electrode becomes negative with respect to the outer electrode.
